Vowel lesson: long and short /y/

 

Objectives

 

  • Remember that ‘y’ is a vowel in most situations
  • Know how to say the short / y̆ /  long / ȳ /
  • Be able to hear the difference between these short and long /y/ sounds
  • Be able to hear the two /y/ sounds at the beginning and in the middle of words
  • Know what the magic ‘e’ does to the short /y̆/  sound.
  • Be able to hear the short /y̆/  and long /ȳ/ sounds in text.
  • Remember key pictures and words ‘y̆ellow and ‘ȳMCA’.
  • Know how to write capital and lower case ‘Yy’. Now that this is different from a hand written’y’.
  • Be able to differentiate between sounds /ă/, /ā/, /ĕ/, /ē/, /ĭ/, / ī /, /ŏ/, /ō/, /ū/, /ŭ/, and /y̆/  /ȳ/.
  • Learn a few interesting facts about yellow.
